Excella Chief Operating Officer Sandy Gillespie Named Washington Business Journal Women Who Mean Business Honoree

Arlington, Virginia, September 13, 2023 – Excella, an agile technology firm, today announced that Chief Operating Officer Sandy Gillespie has been named an honoree for the Washington Business Journal’s 2023 Women Who Mean Business award. With more than 40 years of experience, Gillespie has worked with some of the largest and best-known players in a career that has spanned government sales, business operations, health, and compliance.

“The Washington Business Journal has confirmed what we have long known: Sandy Gillespie is a force of nature,” said Excella CEO Burton White. “Not only has she driven record growth for Excella during her time as COO, but Sandy has provided crucial guidance and mentorship to Excellians looking to further their careers in the industry. Every day I am reminded how lucky we are to have Sandy on our team.”

In her role as Chief Operating Officer, Gillespie helped Excella secure hundreds of millions of dollars in federal contracts and reach enviable growth levels after the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally under her leadership, Excella’s employee attrition rate fell by more than 10% in 2022 while hiring soared across the firm with new employees making up over 44% of its workforce – a company record.

“I am honored to be named alongside so many awe-inspiring women to this year’s WBJ Women Who Mean Business list,” said Gillespie. “Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to work beside numerous formidable, smart women who have transformed the technology and government contracting industries. The business leaders on this list represent a community of thousands of women in leadership in the DC area who are driving economic growth and progress every single day, and I am proud to be among them.”

After receiving hundreds of nominations this year, the Washington Business Journal selected just 25 leaders in the Greater Washington area for the Women Who Mean Business List.
